Set Design - Rawstorne Studio
Rawstorne Studio worked with NBR New Zealand Opera General Director Aiden Lang on this critically acclaimed and award winning production of Mozarts ‘The Marriage of Figaro’.

Aidan Lang set a challenge, the aim was to follow the speed and constantly changing direction of the plot in this farce, as if we the audience were a camera travelling through the central character’s household.

Our studio had to create a multitude of spaces that literally “morphed” into one another, at times small and claustrophobic at other times grand and cavernous. Our concept hinged on designing many moving/tracking set elements. Central to this was a vast double set of panelled walls, these acted as our dividers closing or opening the space as required. Four dividing walls were suspended on tracks above the action, the illusion was further created by a sliding floor piece. These combined set elements allowed us to literally track rooms across the stage whilst revealing new ones.
