RUBGY WORLD CUP 2011, OPENING CEREMONY
DAE
Auckland

Head Of Design - Rawstorne Studio
International production company, DAE, engaged Rawstorne studio as Head of Design, for the Rugby World Cup Opening Ceremony 2011. The brief was to realise and develop the initial DAE creative concept and create a ceremony that would celebrate New Zealand culture and heritage.

Robin worked alongside leading contemporaries in the fields of content creation, choreography and music composition. Key elements of the concept were the large graceful silver, wind powered yachts, which transformed into two giant hammerhead sharks made up of 300 tessellated black and silver shields, a 7m high, steel replica of the Webb Ellis Cup that has now been gifted to the city of Christchurch and a 4m diameter glowing inflatable rugby ball suspended inside the stadium.

The ceremony was watched live by a 60,000 strong crowd and a further estimated ‘billion’ viewers worldwide. The event opened to global critical acclaim.
