THE FESTIVAL OF DANGEROUS IDEAS INSTALLATION
Australian Ethical
Sydney Opera House, Australia
Creative Direction & Production - Rawstorne Studio
Our client Australian Ethical (key sponsor for FODI 2013) brief was for us to demonstrate the matrix that represents their investment portfolio, and to show the positive social and environmental interconnectedness of ethical finance.

In our research we observed neural connectivity and molecular models. The idea developed into a sculptural model that combined traditional handcrafted techniques and hi-tech 21st century fabrication techniques. We began with a 3D CGI model, but required lateral thinking in the “real world” to be able to composite it. We worked with over 9 different suppliers to create this physical 3D artwork, selecting sustainable American Ash as the timber. A master wood turner then created them. We worked with laser etchers and cutters to create the detail and ensure the key messages where relayed to the viewer.

The model was installed at the Sydney Opera House for the duration of the festival and by allowing the viewer to circumnavigate the model and make their own neural pathways the complex systems being described become easier to comprehend.
